If there is one thing Red Green taught us (besides the fact that duct tape is the "handyman's secret weapon"), it’s that a man’s wardrobe isn’t complete without a reliable pair of suspenders. But while Red’s DIY approach often led to hilarious disasters, Perry Suspenders took that same spirit of unconventional problem-solving and turned it into a patented American success story. Born from a DIY prototype of aluminum strips and sheer ingenuity, Perry Suspenders became the go-to choice for Steve Smith’s iconic character because they offered a practical solution for the "Modest Man." We sat down with Joe Perry to discuss their legacy, their Illinois roots, and why the "suspender life" is the only way to live.
My father, Don Perry, invented the Perry Suspenders. He had worn regular clip-on suspenders but had the issue of them always popping off his pants. An avid inventor, my father was always trying to come up with “a better way”. One day, he bent a few pieces of 1” aluminum strips to form the infamous Perry Hooks shape, cut the clips off an old pair of suspenders and attached the aluminum strips (ala Red Green). This is probably why Steve Smith wore the Perry Suspenders on his show. A more practical method in an unconventional way.

Me, being a naïve child of 25 years old, told my father “You don’t wear suspenders with a belt”. Well, he proved me wrong. I started the Perry Suspenders company in 1995 and have sold millions of Perry Suspenders to people who do wear a belt with suspenders. I call it insurance for the Modest Man.
We take pride in handcrafting Perry Suspenders in the USA. Most of our Perry Suspenders are made at a non-profit organization in North Carolina with the assistance of adults with disabilities. Perry Suspenders recently purchased the Welch Brand Suspenders and will be making these suspenders in Decatur, IL.
Suspenders are just so much more comfortable than just wearing a belt. Belts keep your pants from falling by cinching the adjustment of the belt to rest the pants on your hips (If you have any). Suspenders hold your pants up putting all the weight on your shoulders and allowing the belt to be worn at a comfortable non-restricting tightness. The rigidity of the belt helps support the pants around the circumference of your belly.
I used to say that suspenders are only for old men, but anyone who is fighting the Tight Belt Syndrome (TBS) or only having one hand available while the other hand is keeping your pants from dropping appreciates the comfort and value of the Perry Suspenders.
With the purchase of the Welch Brand suspenders, we now have Leather end button-on suspenders for the customers that love the logger button-on look? Of course, we plan to offer them in the infamous Red Green Style.
If Red Green had a son, that is who I would be. My father has the personality Red Green is based upon. If there was a problem, my father would fix it in the most unconventional method. He used a fence post and cap to make a permanent yard torch (The Perry Torch), a plastic sunbeam bread bag and oil to make a device for early detection of breast cancer (The Breast Exam Sensor Pad), and a vibrating fishing pole to help catch fish (don’t ask where he got the vibrator from, I wasn’t there). Finally, the bent aluminum strip on the end of the suspender straps (The Perry Suspenders).
