IN MEMORY OF A POSSUM LODGE LEGEND: EDGAR MONTROSE

IN MEMORY OF A POSSUM LODGE LEGEND: ED MONTROSE FROM THE RED GREEN SHOW

For fans of The Red Green Show, few sounds are as iconic and joyfully chaotic as a distant, echoing "Ka-BOOM!" That was the signature of Edgar K.B. Montrose, Possum Lodge's resident explosives expert, brought to life with manic glee by the immensely talented Graham Greene.

Though his time at the lodge was primarily in the early seasons (1991–1994), Edgar's impact was, quite literally, earth-shattering. After all, Edgar did join the cast after seeing the show at an airport and, upon meeting Steve Smith at the Gemini Awards, asked if he could appear on the show. Smith went on to create the Edgar K.B. Montrose character just for him.

WHO WAS EDGAR MONTROSE ON THE RED GREEN SHOW?

Edgar K.B. Montrose was a man with a simple philosophy: there was no problem that couldn't be solved with a well-placed (or even a poorly-placed) stick of dynamite.

Whether it was removing a tree stump, opening a stubborn jar of pickles, or helping a friend retrieve keys locked in a car, Edgar's immediate and only solution involved a lit fuse.

He was introduced as an old friend of Red Green's, a man whose enthusiasm for demolition was matched only by his cheerful disregard for the consequences.

In his segments, he would typically advise Red or the viewers on the "proper" application of explosives for everyday tasks. His advice was delivered with a wide-eyed, almost giddy excitement—a man truly in love with his craft.

The segment would inevitably end with him demonstrating his technique, followed by his triumphant yell of "Ka-BOOM!" as debris rained down in the background.

GRAHAM GREENE’S PERFORMANCE AS EDGAR MONTROSE

What made Edgar K.B. Montrose so unforgettable was Graham Greene's masterful comedic performance.

Before he became an Academy Award-nominated actor known for powerful dramatic roles in films like Dances with Wolves and The Green Mile, Greene showcased his incredible comedic timing at The Possum Lodge.

He imbued Edgar with a dangerous but lovable twinkle in his eye. He wasn't malicious; he was just a man who sincerely believed that a controlled detonation was the most efficient path from Point A to Point B.

His deadpan explanations, which would suddenly erupt into uncontained excitement, were a hallmark of the show's quirky humor.

THE LEGACY OF EDGAR MONTROSE AT POSSUM LODGE

Edgar K.B. Montrose left the show as Graham Greene's film career began to skyrocket—a testament to his incredible acting range.

While fans were sad to see him go, the character was never forgotten. He perfectly embodied the spirit of the Possum Lodge: solving simple problems with absurdly complicated and destructive methods.

He was a walking, talking, and exploding example of the show's motto:

"Quando omni flunkus, moritati" (When all else fails, play dead) — though Edgar's version would likely be "Quando omni flunkus, detonati."

So here's to Edgar K.B. Montrose, the man who proved that a little bit of C-4 could go a long way. His time on screen was brief, but his memory continues to be a blast.
