Christmas Eve means a lot to many. To us, it means celebrating Steve Smith, who is celebrating his eightieth birthday this year.
We sat down with Red (a.k.a. Steve Smith) to find out how he really feels about birthdays, nostalgia, creativity, and his newfound status as December’s Member of the Month.

Christmas Eve has always been about tradition, reflection, and a little bit of mischief — which makes it the perfect time to celebrate a milestone birthday. Turning 80 is no small thing, but as you’ll see, Steve approaches it with his usual mix of humor, humility, and perfectly timed exaggeration.
A chemistry set for my 10th birthday. Not the gift itself, but what me and my friends tried to do with it. My parents could never get fire insurance after that.

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Stop trying to be normal. You’re really lousy at it.

What activities do you think are performed better with age?
Saying no, exaggerating, and never exceeding expectations — no matter how low.

What part of doing the podcast do you enjoy the most?
Working with my son. But there’s a long list of positives. All the great voice actors. And it’s pretty nifty that Keleghan, Bainborough, Lumby, and I are still friends 35 years later. And not just because I owe them money.
I’m very lucky that I’m still allowed to have a creative outlet. Craziness keeps me sane. Or close enough.

You are December’s Member of the Month. How seriously do you take this honor?
Very, very extremely.
I’ve received a few Geminis, an Honourary Doctorate, a Rocky, the Order of Canada, being inducted into the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame… and now this?!?! Going to be hard to top.

It was fantastic to see you when you came to Fort Wayne and signed the back of my Possum Lodge shirt at the hardware store. I still chuckle when I remember the 3M representative’s disbelief at the number of fans that showed up! Whenever I feel a bit blue these days, I pull the RG DVDs off the shelf and play a few. Your talent is one of a kind. Happy 80th!
Happy Birthday 🎈🎂 Red Green and Steve Smith congrats to you getting this months award God Bless you

Happy Birthday, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you to the entire Red Green family and especially the Steve Smith family from the Monroe family.
Having watched all 300 episodes I have liked the new segments added in the later years. I really liked the inside of the lodge segments. Also glad I was able to find all the seasons on dvd.
Hey – I got quite a few chuckles out of the first few seasons of Reg Green when I was a teen before going off to college. I also gained some small appreciation for Canada too. If the show still airs, I hope you make fun of this message as you did in several segments of ‘mail from real people’ back in the day.
Keep your stick on the ice. Unless with global warming its just keep hoping the ice sticks. Such times we live in.
Peace!
Happy 80th Birthday,Steve from someone who will be 80 in March!
Happy 80th my longtime, remote, long distance, never met, but faithful lodge buddy. You’ve brought much laughter, fun and common sense (on occasion) to many. Happily, you’re still at it, although in a different medium. You’re a creative genius. I wish you, health, happiness and many more.

Happy birthday, Red! Thanks for all the wisdom and laughs!
I which ever one of the shows, love all the people and things they did on the show. Really miss the show 😭, but all good things must end 😔 thanks everyone for the show 👍😁.
A very, very happy birthday and have a very happy holiday season! I’m having one because, not only did I embarrass myself in front of my friends, my wife and the police, I can’t even remember what in heck I did that was so darn embarrassing.
Oh well; that’s what makes for a great holiday…
Wait a minute: these aren’t my pants!
Happy 80, my 80th also!
Brilliant! Happy Birthday Steve! And here’s to many more. My sincerest thanks and gratitude for all the years of laughs. We’re still watching on demand daily, and always will!
Happy Birthday, Mr. Steve Smith!
Are we still meeting up and moon the Possum city hall? I shaved and everything.
Hi Steve,
Happy Birthday! I have enjoyed regularly watching your show since the early 1990’s when I discovered it on PBS. In 1997, my wife and I visited Niagara Falls and Toronto. We were able to attend a taping of your show- the episode titled “The Strange Ranger”. I was lucky and privileged to be picked by Rick Green to be one of the two fellows who got to sit up front with the actors during the lodge meeting final scene. Thank you!!! I attended all of your stand up shows at Wilkes-Barre, PA. At one of them I was the fellow who gave you a photo print of a Canada Jay. Several times I visited Algonquin Park. I can tell you that folks up there know Red Green well. I enjoy your podcasts. my best wishes to you, your family, and castmates. I hope you have many more good birthdays!!

First off happy birthday Red. I would like to thank you and all of the possum Lodge members for years of absolute laughter. My boys actually got me and my wife tickets and saw you in Lincoln Nebraska years ago. I’ve been a charter member for I don’t know how long in the 70s?, 80s? Keep your stick on the ice old buddy !!
Oh and happy happy birthday Steve!!!
Thanks for the memories! I still watch the show and love it!
Happy Birthday!
The Red Green Show helped me make it through my teaching career. I could always count on the humor to put a smile on my face at the end of a tough week. Now I am retired and, as I look back, I can honestly say I couldn’t have done it without you and the incredible cast.
Thank you.
P.S.
My youngest daughter shares December 24th as a birthday with you. She is not happy about that. But hey, She’ll get over it.
