After 30+ years of The Red Green Show, we took a look at who’s still watching, where you are, what you have in common and just how much Red Green you’ve actually watched. It might surprise you. It might not. Where are our data nerds? (Raises hand). 🙋
We gathered social media comments, emails, letters (yes, we still get loads of letters), streaming and website analytics, and more. And we found what we already suspected. The Red Green Show hasn't made regular new episodes since 2004, but that's not really the point anymore. 🧮 📬
The Possum Lodge has become a lifestyle.
And somehow, all these years later, we still get to participate in the fictional world of Possum Lake together. If we had to boil the people of Possum Lodge down to six things, it would probably be these:
We've noticed there are roughly three groups.
The original fan
A young 50+ who watched the show on CBC, PBS or good old-fashioned television. They remember the characters and quotes instantly and have a genuine attachment to the show. For them, Possum Lodge isn't just a logo.
The inherited fan
Someone introduced to Red Green by a dad, grandfather, husband, uncle or somebody else who knew what was good for them.
We don't just hear, "I used to watch that show." - We hear some version of, "My dad and I watched this every Saturday."
The new fan
People discovering clips, full episodes, streaming channels, YouTube and social media without ever having watched the original broadcast.
Turns out you don't need 15 seasons of backstory to understand a guy building something ridiculous with duct tape. We think that's a big part of why Red Green has stuck around longer than your average 1990s television show.
It's not just something people watched. It's something people joined.
Here's something we've figured out:
Red Green fans don't primarily love nostalgia. They love recognition.
Red is funny because people know Red.
You know the guy who refuses to throw something away because he might need it someday.
You know the garage containing six broken lawnmowers.
You know the person who fixes something incorrectly rather than admitting he doesn't know how.
You know the fishing trip that becomes far more complicated than necessary.
Sometimes you are that guy.
The characters genuinely like one another. Viewers recognize people who solve problems exactly the way Red does. And underneath everything, the show has always remained pretty simple: funny, familiar and basically good-natured.
The brand has always laughed with its audience more than at it. You're just like the characters on the show. Resourceful. Loyal. Cheap. Stubborn. Occasionally delusional. Usually under-qualified. But ultimately decent.
We kid. Mostly.
🤣 And maybe the biggest thing we've noticed is that Red Green people don't take themselves too seriously.
Here's what the numbers tell us about the people watching:
53% women / 47% men. Yep. Seriously.
Median age is 55, but a quarter of you are under 40.
52% own a pet, and cats barely edge out dogs, 38% to 37%. 🐕🐈🦭
73% live in rural or suburban areas. 🏡
61% are married.
The show was never polished.
The guys weren't cool.
The Lodge certainly wasn't aspirational.
And somehow, that's exactly why it worked.
There was no attempt to make these guys something they weren't. Things broke. Plans went sideways. People looked ridiculous.
Nobody learned very much. 🪓
And everybody came back next week.
This might be our favorite part.
People watched with their dads. Now they're watching with their kids.
Someone's grandfather introduced them to Red. Someone else discovers a clip on YouTube today and sends it to a friend.
The show has become something people hand to each other.
And that's probably a better description of what "multi-generational" actually looks like.
We stopped making regular episodes a long time ago.
You apparently didn't get the message. You kept watching. A lot.
Since 2022, more than 3.6 BILLION minutes of The Red Green Show have been watched just on Red Green streaming channels. That's more than 6,800 years.
On YouTube, you've watched another 2+ billion minutes, or roughly another 3,800 years. Guys.
We're not even going to attempt to count all the social media views over the years. 🧮
At this point, we're just grateful nobody is billing us by the minute.

Apparently, Possum Lodge is an evening establishment. The biggest hour is 9 PM local time, with 8 PM just behind it. In fact, 27% of all viewing happens between 7 PM and midnight.
The quietest hour? 4 AM. Which seems reasonable.
Sunday is the biggest overall viewing day, followed by Saturday. But the single busiest time of the entire week is Thursday at 9 PM, followed by Fridays at 8 PM and Tuesday at 9 PM. So if you've ever wondered what thousands of other Red Green fans are doing on a Thursday night, now you know.
Some episodes and clips just refuse to retire. Apparently you have favorites.
Watching is one thing. A surprising number of you also decided you needed a little Possum Lodge in your closets, garages, workshops and mailboxes.

In other words: hats, suspenders, hockey jerseys and official membership in a fictional lodge. Seems about right.
So after all these years, maybe the best thing we've learned about the people of Possum Lodge is this:
That's basically The Possum Lodge. It's also why "We're all in this together" has lasted a lot longer than most television catchphrases. Turns out it was a pretty good description of the whole thing. We're glad you're here!
AND SPEAKING OF WHICH
You're the why we're launching Red Green TV. You kept showing up, so we're giving Possum Lodge a bigger home. And if you're reading this, you're probably one of the reasons why.
A place for all 15 seasons. The Red Green Channel. The Possum Lodge Podcast. Members Only content. New things we're making.
